Villa Parens is a stunning newcomer to the Friuli wine scene, but with a history which stretches back to 1967 when the renowned Puiatti label was established by Vittorio Parens. Giovanni has taken on the baton from his father, and after an early career playing basketball for Venice he subsequently dedicated himself to his family's wine business. Born from a desire to focus on high quality rather than large production, Giovanni sold Puiatti in 2010, but kept the prized Rutters vineyard located in the heart of the prestigeous sub-region of Collio.

The 6 hectare Rutters vineyard is nestled under the foothills of mountains close to the Slovenian border, surrounded by native woodland it benefits from excellent limestone soils, mixed with clay, over mountain rock. Planted with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Ribolla Gialla and Pinot Nero, the vineyard site recieves cold winds descended from Russia, which keeps the vines dry and free from disease.

The 'Prindis' is a wonderful blend of 50% Chardonay with 40% local Ribolla Gialla and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes are hand picked and rigourously sorted in the vineyard, before a very gentle pressing and fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. 2013 was an excellent (almost perfect!) vintage in Collio, with sun and rainfall perfectly balanced. Only 1000 cases of 'Prindis' were produced.

This has a wonderful balance between an aromatics and fullness. The Ribolla Gialla adds almost Riesling like notes to the wine, while the 10% Sauvignon just lifts the fuller Chardonnay fruit. Lovely tight citrus and greengage, with herbal and mineral notes. A textured palate leads to a long crisp finish. A very classy and understated wine from one of Italy's best white wine regions. Drink while young and vibrant, until 2018.

"Fresh herbal aromatics with a refreshing prickle on the tongue, this is delightfully juicy and intense." Anthony Rose, The Independent, September 2015
