Gaillac Blanc 2005
Various different vineyards get lumped together under France's 'southwest' banner, which can be misleading - some of them are not particularly close in terms of location and style of wine produced. Gaillac, one of the area's biggest producers, is an old wine region that flourished in the early Middle Ages, in part due to the quality of its wines and also the easy access it had to the Atlantic and the export markets of northern Europe. (Apparently Henry VIII was a fan, regularly taking 20 barrels a year!) Recently there has been renewed interest in Gaillac. Smaller producers have been investing in modern cellars and using some more familiar grape varieties to blend with the interesting local ones. Chateau Clement Termes has been in the David family for nearly 150 years, and is currently run by Francois David, a passionate vigneron who has 60 hectares under vines and a super modern and well equipped cellar, where he makes a broad range of different styles of Gaillac. This delicious dry white uses an interesting blend of these typical Gaillac grape varieties. The Mauzac, which provides crispness, blends well with the Loin de l'Oeil which delivers weight and alcohol. While the Muscadelle brings flavour and fruit. Bright golden colour with green hints. Intense aromas of peach and apricot, while the palate is rounded and fleshy with exotic fruit but with some freshness that gives good balance. This won a SILVER MEDAL at Vinalies International 2006 in Paris so its pedigree is good and it's great value too.
