Crozes Hermitage 2005

Crozes Hermitage is the largest of all the northern appellations of Côtes du Rhône and the vineyards lay around Hermitage, where the soil is richer and easier to work with. Martinelles is a 20 hectare estate with 14 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage as well as 6 hectares in neighbouring Hermitage. While the estate has been in the family for three generations it is only since 2003 they have started to bottle and market their own wine, having previously sold everything to the negociant. Their terroir is some of the best in the appellation being situated on the clay and limestone slopes around Gervan, which are similar to the more distinguished Hermitage. The wine is dominated by Roussanne but there is 5% Marsanne to add some freshness. It has plenty of peach and acacia fruit, with mineral hints.
