The Nikka Whisky Co. was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, who is widely acknowledged as the father of Japanese whisky. In 1918 he travelled to Scotland, where he learnt the secrets of whisky making. In 1920 he returned to Japan and worked with a company to produce Japan’s first whisky. It soon became apparent that to produce whisky the way he felt it should be made, Masataka would have to become independent. In 1934 Masataka established Nikka Whisky and built its first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, which he had always considered to be the ideal whisky-making site in Japan. Today Nikka has two large distilleries and several blending and bottling plants and is now part of the Asahi Group. Over the decades Nikka has become a fixture in Japan, known for its passion for quality and flavour. This single malt whisky from the Yoichi distillery, stored and matured for 12 years or more, is characterised by the aroma of aged casks tinged with gentle peat and a rich and long-lasting taste. On the nose there are discernable notes of smoke, apple and pears, while on the palate delicious orchid fruits, peat and smoke launch their attack. this is a fresh, crisp, medium-bodied whisky that finished with a slightly sweet and spicy touch.
