David Maitre Vigneron VDP Rouge 2006
Various different vineyards get lumped together under France's 'southwest' banner, which can be misleading - some of them are not particularly close in terms of location and style of wine produced. Chateau Clement Termes has been in the David family for nearly 150 years, and is currently run by Francois David, a passionate vigneron who has 60 hectares under vines and a super modern and well equipped cellar, where he makes a broad range of different styles of wine. Along with the better known Merlot this wine also has Duras in the blend. This is a local grape variety that adds colour and backbone and suit the gravely terroir at Clement Termes. It has a lovely, intense ruby colour and a spicy nose with liquorice hints. A delightful everyday wine from a top producer. Excellent value for money.
