Chateau Talbot Saint-Julien 2001
Chateau Talbot gets its name from the English commander John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury and former Governor of Aquitaine, whose home was lost after defeat in the battle of Castillon in 1453, (having been posted there as one of King Henry VI's soldiers sent to sort out the rebellious French!) The vineyards of this historic chateau dominate St Julien, in terms of size at least, as they account for an impressive 107 hectares. The estate is one of the original ten Quatriemes Crus (Fourth Growths) from the 1855 Bordeaux classification and although this status was accurate at that time, it could be argued that today it's worthy of a much higher designation. The wines are known for their earthy quality which is widely attributed to a particular vine infection known as Brettanomyces. Chris Kissack, The Wine Doctor wrote these notes on the 2001 in November 2005. "A good, youthful depth of colour here, with an appealing nutty character on the nose. This has a nice, elegant style on the palate, showing a supple profile, with a gentle, integrating structure. There is still some primary fruit, but no lack of finesse. Should be very good indeed, but needs 3-4 years at least. 17+/20" Drink 2008-2009
