Saltram celebrates the tradition and heritage behind the Barossa Valley, making flagship red wines of great style and taste. Many of Australia's most influential and celebrated winemakers have passed through the Saltram's cellar doors throughout its 150 year history. In 1862, Saltram crushd its first grapes and made 1800 gallons of wine that was simply called No. 1 Shiraz. This Shiraz is a deep, dark red with aromas of black olives, dark chocolate and dark fruits on the nose. The palate is full, powerful and richly layered with even textured tannins, savoury notes and a long finish. This wine is ideal for cellaring for up to 15-20 years.
"Excellent colour; outstanding wine, richly deserving its show record; redolent of red and black fruits on the bouquet and palate; very good oak handling, and ripe, fine tannins perfectly pitched. Unlimited future." 96 points - James Halliday, Aug 2010
"Peppery and refined. Juicy and saline. Never slips into excess, although there is a lot of smart toasty oak here, which for some may be easy to criticize. Finishes nice and dry. Drink now and over the next decade." 92 points - James Suckling, June 2011
"Deep garnet-purple, Saltram’s 2006 No. 1 Shiraz has intense macerated blackberry and mint aromas with some underbrush, damp loam and allspice notes plus a whiff of anise. Still tight and youthful in the mouth, the full-bodied beauty has generous fruit supported by crisp acidity and medium-firm very fine grained tannins. The finish is long with some earthy nuances. Approachable now, it should open and soften in a year or two and drink best from 2013 to 2020+." 92 points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Dec 2010
"Mint, spice, blueberry, rich black fruit and medicinal bouquet. Intense fruit with hints of pepper and cocoa. Round and juicy with plenty of vanilla oak. A powerhouse wine but distinctive and long." 17 points - Decanter
