Altos Las Hormigas is a 216 hectare estate situated in Lujan de Cuyo, one of Mendoza’s top grape-growing areas. It was bought by winemaker Alberto Antonini and Antonio Morescalchi together with some of their friends after their first trip to Argentina. They planted 40 hectares of Malbec between 1996-1999 on gentle slopes at 800m above sea level which face east towards the Andes. They also buy in grapes, primarily from La Consulta (south of Mendoza city). Grapes for the Reserva are grown in the Altos vineyards and also in nearby vineyards whose vines are nearly 100 years old in La Consulta - Vista Flores (Uco Valley), and Vistalba – Perdriel – Las
Compuertas ( Luján de Cuyo). This wine is deep red/black in colour, with intense perfumes of red fruit, plum jam and blackcurrants. On the palate the wine is intense and concentrated, with good structure and tobacco, chocolate and coffee characters, balanced by a mineral note. Ripe, supple tannins support the fruit through to a long, perfumed finish.
