Crozes Hermitage 2005
Crozes Hermitage is the largest of all the northern appellations of Côtes du Rhône and the vineyards lay around Hermitage, where the soil is richer and easier to work with. Crozes Hermitage wines are less robust then Hermitage but nevertheless, they are very aromatic and fruity. Compared to the price of Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage is still affordable and offers great value for money (and your palate!) and can be drunk young. Martinelles is a 20 hectare estate with 14 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage as well as 6 hectares in neighbouring Hermitage. While the estate has been in the family for three generations it is only since 2003 they have started to bottle and market their own wine, having previously sold everything to the negociant. Their terroir is some of the best in the appellation being situated on the clay and limestone slopes around Gervan, which are similar to the more distinguished Hermitage. Elegant fruity nose, with raspberry fruit and blackcurrant hints on the palate, along with some spicy notes.
