The Quinta do Infantado Ports are grown, made and bottled at the Quinta (Estate). The Quinta is located near Pinhão, at an altitude of 150 metres, in a sub-region called Gontelho, which has long been renowned as a source of outstanding Port. This winery was established in 1816 by D. Pedro IV, the Portuguese crown heir, as a winery was needed to collect taxes, which were then paid in grapes or wine. This is the origin of the Quinta’s name: Infantado derives from Infante, the Portuguese for Prince. Prince D. Pedro IV later became Emperor of Brazil. The Roseira family has owned Quinta do Infantado for over a century. All the vineyards are class A (the best in Douro Valley). This port has tremendous depth of colour, with ripe red fruit and chocolate perfumes on the nose. On the palate the wine is rich and sweet, but beautifully balanced by well-integrated tannins and a chocolate, plum and savoury cherry fruit. The finish is elegant and clean, with fine, delicate perfumes of warm, ripe fruit.
