Tokaj is a region bounded by the rivers Bodrog and Tisza in the north-eastern corner of Hungary, 120 miles from Budapest. It consists of 28 villages spread over the Tokaj hills at approximately 220 metres above sea level. The Dobogo estate is in the centre of Tokaj and was founded in 1869. It belongs to Izabella Zwack, the youngest member of the Zwack family better known in Hungary for their distillery on the banks of the Danube where Unicum, Hungary’s liqueur is produced. Dobogó only produces 6 puttonyos Tokaj Aszu in the best vintages. Tokaj aszu is made from grapes affected by ‘botrytis cinerea’, noble rot, which dehydrates the grapes and concentrates the sugars, aromas and acidity. The grapes are grown in the 30 year old Dobogó Pincészet first-growth vineyards in the volcanic subregion of Mád and Tállya. The vineyards are planted 60% Furmint, 30% Hárslevelu and 10% Muscat Lunel. Yields are restricted to an average of 1kg of grapes per vine.  This quality Tokaj is deep golden yellow in colour, with an orange tinge on the rim. On the nose, it is perfumed and rich, with scents of dried apricots, figs and citrus fruit, with a lovely balance between sweetness, fruit and acidity on the palate, keeping the wine fresh to the finish.
