The impressive house of Florio continues, virtually alone, to carry the torch of quality among the once great Marsala producers of Sicily's western tip. The winery is still situated on the original site in Marsala, which is 200 years old and extends over 20,000 sq meters and produces over 5 million litres of Marsala which are matured in traditional 300l oak casks. Soils here are mainly silcio-calcareous and clay-calcareous. The climate is very dry with approximately 500mm or rainfall annually. The vines are trained vertically and are pruned using the traditional 'alberello' (bush) or spalliera methods. The area of production of marsala is limited to the province of Trepani, which excludes the islands of Egadi and the commune of Alcomo. This amazing wine is amber with golden reflections. The nose is full, rich but well balanced. The taste is harmonious, smooth, with hints of vanilla and almond flavour. Great as a digestif, for making Zabaglione or pairing with traditional Italian desserts.
