Aldo Vajra's wines are characterised by pristine flavours and clearly defined perfumes. These characters are attributable to the position of Vajra's vineyards at about 400 metres above sea level in the village of Vergne in the commune of Barolo. In the 2004 vintage, we arranged for Australian winemaker Stephen Pannell, who is besotted by Nebbiolo and Barbera, to work the vintage with Aldo who has taken many of his tips to heart. Vajra grows his Moscato grapes in a single vineyard site in Mango, in the heart of the Moscato d'Asti zone. It is a south-facing, 2.5 hectare vineyard planted on a very steep slope. Grapes were hand harvested in the first week of September.
This wine is what the Italians call frizzante, meaning that it is lightly carbonated. With light and refreshing bubbles, the wine is slightly sweet with great white fruit flavours and good acidity. Light, pale yellow in colour, it has a wonderful lively perfume of freshly crushed grapes, a touch of sherbet and fresh peach juice. Semi-sweet and lightly frothing, with a soft, fresh mousse it has a lively peach and apricot character and a clean, fresh finish. Excellent accompaniment to cake or fruit based desserts.
