Nyetimber Vineyard pioneered the UK's recent rise to fame and recognition for its ability to be taken seriously at international level. The estate was conceived, planted and equipped exclusively for the production of top-quality sparkling wines. Just over fourteen hectares (thirty-five acres) of gentle, south-facing slopes of greensand soil were planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the classic varieties of the Champagne region. The hot summer of 2003 has resulted in one of the fruitiest wines from Nyetimber yet. The 2003 Classic Cuvée, a blend of 60% Chardonnay, 23% Pinot Noir and 17% Pinot Meunier, is brilliant golden in colour, has a fine-beaded mousse and a nose that shows aromas of mandarins, vanilla with notes of lemon zest, shortbread and light apricot underneath. This is a very fruit-driven cuvée, with yeasty and biscuity notes playing the supporting role. Fresh and pure yet complex on the palate, it has a bright and cheery start, compact and concentrated in fruit flavours of pink grapefruit, melon and apricots, and lovely minerality. All three varieties are in evidence, but with Chardonnay to the fore at the moment. This wine was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2009 International Wine Challenge.
