Greywacke is the exciting new solo venture of Kevin Judd, who was chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 vintages and instrumental in the international recognition which New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc enjoys today. The debut wine under the Greywacke label was the 2009 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, which sold out almost everywhere. Transformed by naturally occurring fermentations this is a sauvignon blanc of considerable depth and opulence. The bouquet has the lushness of a lemon crème brûlée, with sweet vanillin notes infused with thyme and toasted sesame. The palate is generous and crammed with savoury complexity – a ‘wild child’ sauvignon that is rich and creamy with a lingering chalky texture.
"The 2010 “Wild Sauvignon” has intense grapefruit, lemon curd and white peach notes with an enticing yeasty and toasty undercurrent with nuances of baking bread, honeyed brioche and marzipan. The palate brings a lovely suggestion of creaminess to the texture, with a refreshing acid line and a long finish. It’s built to age and should cellar gracefully to 2017+." 92+ points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
"Sourced from eight different sites in the central Wairau and southern valleys, this is Judd’s very successful attempt at a barrel- and wild yeast-fermented style. It’s not completely dry, but you don’t notice the sugar. Savoury, mealy and almost Graves-like, this is the pick of Judd’s “dry” whites". 94 points - blog.timatkin.com, Tim Atkin, Jan 11more ↓ less ↑
