'Bourgeois Sancerre Les Baronnes' Rouge 2006
Domaine Henri Bourgeois, Sancerre.
Bourgeois Sancerre Les Baronnes Rouge' 2006
An acclaimed producer whose wines exhibit the complexity of the terroir of Chavignol, being chalky with a touch of gunflint, initially steely, then ripeness in the mouth with a broad array of flavours and wonderful length. Sancerre is one of the most famous wines in France. Sancerre is also a very beautiful village with a typical castle in the Loire valley.
'Les Baronnes' comes from the slopes separating the Chavignol from Sancerre, the terroir being an amalgam of clay and limestone chalk. Oak aged in barrels, red Sancerre is made from Burgundy's Pinot Noir grape, and is only produced in relatively small quantities; hence it is seldom seen outside France. It is however quite different from red burgundy, in that most is drunk relatively young. Yet it is a beguiling wine, which, having undergone that touch of oak ageing to add a bit of complexity, develops a smooth, vanilla-fruity richness after a couple of years in bottle.
From an excellent Sancerre vintage, this juicy, fruity wine shows intense aromas of raspberry and cherry on the nose that develop further on the palate. Soft tannins, crisp yet balanced acidity and masses of ripe red berry flavours give fantastic summer drinking
Try this red slightly chilled to accompany a summer picnic - very refreshing. Older bottles, with their low tannins, will happily accompany grilled pork, lamb chops and hard cheeses.
A really fine wine with great complexity and a wonderful array of flavours.
